How to Improve Eyelash Extension Retention: 7 Common Mistakes You Must Avoid
When a client invests in eyelash extensions, they expect them to last several weeks looking full, beautiful, and uniform. The truth is that good retention doesn’t just depend on the glue you use. It depends on your technique, your understanding of your workspace conditions, and how you prepare and educate your clients.
Retention is one of the biggest challenges for new lash artists, and it’s also one of the factors that impacts your reputation the most. If your sets look beautiful on day one but begin shedding after just a few days, your clients won’t return or recommend you.
That’s why mastering retention is essential if you want a fully booked schedule and a successful lash business. Below, we’ll walk you through 7 common mistakes that hurt retention and how to fix them so your sets last longer and your clients are thrilled.
1. Not properly prepping the natural lashes
Proper preparation is one of the most important steps for ensuring good retention. Many lash artists focus on the design of the set and forget that if the natural lash isn’t completely free of oils, makeup, or debris, the adhesive will not bond properly.
Before starting any application, make sure to:
- Wash the lashes with an oil-free lash shampoo
- Completely dry them with a handheld fan
- Apply primer only at the base of the natural lash
A clean lash is the foundation of good retention. Skipping this step is like trying to stick tape to a dirty surface: it simply won’t hold.
2. Using too much or too little adhesive
Adhesive is the heart of retention, but it must be used in the right amount. Using too much can create clumps that weigh down the natural lash and cause premature shedding. Using too little makes the bond too weak to last.
Dip the base of the extension about 2 mm into the adhesive and make sure the bonding point is clean with no excess glue. Practice this motion until it becomes precise and natural.
3. Not controlling the humidity and temperature in your workspace
Humidity and temperature have a direct impact on how your adhesive works. If the humidity is too low, the adhesive will dry too slowly and the extension will slip off before it fully bonds. If the humidity is too high, the glue will dry too quickly, not giving you enough time to place the extension correctly, resulting in a weak bond.
Use a hygrometer to monitor your room conditions and a humidifier or dehumidifier to keep humidity between 45 and 60 percent. Also make sure to refresh your glue drop every 20 to 30 minutes to keep it fresh and effective.
4. Not isolating lashes properly
Poor isolation is one of the most common causes of bad retention. When two natural lashes are stuck together, they pull on each other and shed prematurely. It can also cause discomfort, redness, and even damage to your client’s natural lashes.
Take the time to perfectly isolate each lash before placing the extension. It might feel slow at first, but with practice it becomes quick and your sets will last much longer.
5. Not matching the extension to the natural lash growth cycle
Every natural lash is in a different stage of its growth cycle. If you place extensions that are too long or heavy on lashes that are in the early (anagen) stage, they will likely fall out early.
Learning to recognize the stages of the natural lash growth cycle is essential for achieving great retention. Use lighter extensions on shorter lashes and reserve your longest extensions for mature lashes (catagen or telogen) that can support the weight.
6. Not educating your clients on aftercare
You can create the most perfect set in the world, but if your client doesn’t follow proper aftercare, the retention will suffer. Educating them is part of your responsibility as a professional lash artist.
Clearly explain that they must:
- Avoid touching or rubbing their lashes
- Avoid oil-based products near the eyes
- Wash their lashes daily with a lash cleanser
- Schedule refills every 2 to 3 weeks
When clients know how to care for their extensions, your sets last longer and they’ll come back happy for fills.
7. Not investing in advanced education and hands-on training
Many artists believe they only need a basic course to get started, but mastering retention and volume technique requires ongoing education. Learning to control humidity, choose the right adhesive, work with different natural lash types, and create perfect volume fans isn’t something you master in a weekend.
